More Than a Summer Job

DCCU's Seasonal Program

Each year, DCCU welcomes a group of rising and current college students through our Seasonal Employment Program – a short-term, flexible opportunity designed to offer meaningful and real-world work experience. This program not only helps participants build valuable skills they can carry into their college careers and beyond but also gives them a closer look at what it’s like to work in a professional environment. In today’s blog, we’re highlighting three seasonal employees – Ally, Sam, and Noah – and sharing their unique experiences as part of this year’s program.

The amount of training I received at DCCU is unlike any other training I've received, and it really sets them apart as an employer. They are very invested in our growth, and that means a lot.

For Ally, the program was about more than just gaining job experience – it was about finding purpose and building genuine relationships. “I needed a job to bridge the gap between undergraduate and graduate school, and I knew I wanted something that gave me purpose,” she shared. Through her role as a Member Representative at our South High location in Harrisonburg, Ally developed strong connections with both members and fellow seasonal employees. She was surprised by how quickly she built rapport with members and credits the supportive environment at DCCU for helping her thrive. “I’ve been in some workplaces that have felt really competitive,” she said. “But I’ve found the environment at DCCU to be the opposite. Everyone I’ve encountered, from my leaders to my teammates, has been very supportive. I feel like they genuinely want me to succeed.” Ally also emphasized the quality of the training she received. “The amount of training I received at DCCU is unlike any other training I’ve received, and it really sets them apart as an employer. They are very invested in our growth, and that means a lot.”

Sam, Facilities

I have built several connections the last three months that will extend well beyond this summer.

Sam has spent this summer working with our Facilities team, where he picked up a surprising number of skills he says will benefit him well beyond the workplace. “This summer, I’ve learned a lot of skills I can use both professionally and in my personal life,” he said. “Not only is everyone friendly, but they’re also excited to help you succeed.” Like Ally, Sam was struck by the welcoming and warm culture at DCCU. “I expected corporate work to feel cold, and I didn’t expect to make friends. But I have built several connections the last three months that will extend well beyond this summer.” Sam also found real meaning in his work. “At DCCU, I feel like the work I did here this summer was very impactful. This is my second year in the program, and I look forward to the opportunity to return next summer.”

Noah, Information Security

Nobody makes you feel silly for not knowing something. Instead, they do whatever they can to help you understand.

Noah initially started with DCCU looking for a way to earn extra money. But two summers later, he’s discovered a potential career path. “My time here made me realize that I want to work in a financial institution like DCCU,” Noah said. “I really enjoy helping people any way I can, from supporting them in their finances to assisting my teammates with projects.” What stood out most to Noah was the team-oriented atmosphere. “Nobody makes you feel silly for not knowing something. Instead, they do whatever they can to help you understand.” He encourages future seasonal employees to take full advantage of the opportunity: “Come in with an eagerness to learn about everything! There are many different departments at DCCU to choose from, so try to soak up all the knowledge you can.”

A Launchpad for the Future
Across all three stories you’ll notice a few common themes – thorough training, real-world experience, and a genuine investment in each employee’s success. No matter the role, participants leave the program with valuable insight, new skills, and often, a clearer vision for their futures. “I urge you to apply,” said Ally. “The seasonal program at DCCU is a great opportunity to gain real experience in the workforce.”
