DCCU's Seasonal Program

Hands-On Experience Leads to Lasting Skills

Each year, DCCU offers a Seasonal Employment Program. These flexible and short-term positions provide real world employment and practical application. The program gives rising and current college students the chance to gain experience in their field of study, build relationships, and take valuable knowledge into their long-term careers. In today’s blog Sam, Ellie, and Ava share their one-of-a-kind experiences.

Sam

Sam spent the summer in Product Development, working on the upkeep of in-house applications, updating projects, and fixing tickets. As a senior computer science major, he was able to gain knowledge that he can apply in the future. “The people are great and the work is fun. I genuinely feel like I’ve learned what a career actually looks like,” he said.

Sam explained that throughout his time at DCCU, the most gratifying aspect has been the feeling that he is helping others. “It’s very rewarding when someone comes to you with a problem and you’re able to fix it for them,” he said. In addition to helping people, Sam appreciates how quickly you are accepted at DCCU. “You can’t walk down the hall and see someone without them smiling at you and hearing a ‘good morning’,” he said.

Ellie

Ellie, who was a seasonal Member Representative at Stuarts Draft for the second summer, also explained the feeling of being welcomed and having DCCU create a lasting impact on her future career. “The community is great here. The second I started here I was welcomed very kindly into this branch. It was a breath of fresh air,” she said. “I am going into Physical Therapy and learning how to have meaningful, one-on-one conversations with members has grown my necessary social skills.” Ellie explained that the branch team is one of the aspects of DCCU she appreciates the most. “We do everything as a team. It feels like a family, which is awesome,” she said.

She shared that her biggest takeaway from the seasonal program has been how important it is to enhance the member’s experience. “Don’t forget the why behind what you’re doing. It can be easy to forget when it gets busy, but remember, we’re here to help our members be more educated about what we have to offer and their financial wellness as a whole,” she said.

Ava

For Ava, who spent her summer working alongside the DCCU Marketing team, accepting this seasonal position was a simple choice. As a rising senior majoring in multimedia journalism, Ava was excited to jump in and get involved. “I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that I’ve been granted this summer to work with DCCU’s Marketing team. It’s been so special to get hands-on experience doing something you’re passionate about,” she said. “I feel just like a sponge absorbing everything around me.” From photoshoots to writing blog articles and creating social media content, Ava’s experiences here have helped her hone skills she can use in the future.

But it’s the focus on DCCU members that Ava found most surprising during her summer here. No matter the size of their financial goals, improving the financial health of our membership and community is a key part of furthering DCCU’s mission. “I chose DCCU for a summer job because it really means something to me when an organization is involved in the community around them,” she shared.

Sam, Ellie, and Ava may have spent the summer in different departments at DCCU, but their experiences overlap in several ways. They received hands-on training that will benefit them in their field of study, while building valuable skills they can apply now. “Seasonal employment at DCCU not only helps prepare you for your future career, but it also helps you grow personally,” said Ava. “Don’t be nervous to apply because everyone here is so welcoming and kind!”
