3 Ways to Reduce Back to School Shopping

Most children get excited about shopping for brand new clothes, shoes, and supplies before school starts each year, but back to school shopping doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are three ways to help prevent the financial stress of preparing to send your child back to school:

  1. Check your Inventory
Before you head to the stores to start shopping, take an inventory of what your child already has that can last another year. Sometimes notebooks, binders and pens are still like new. The same is true for clothing and shoes. Clean out your child’s closet before you shop and donate items that no longer fit. This will provide a clear picture of what your child really needs so that you can make those items the shopping priority.

  2. Set a Budget
Now that you have determined the items that your child needs, figure out how much you plan to spend. Sticking to a budget will help control the impulse buys that lead to overspending.

  3. Watch for Sales
Back to school season is a prime time for retail sales, both in stores and online. Retailers are competing for your business and it’s important to shop around for the best deals. Also be on the lookout for the Sales Tax Holiday, which eliminates sales tax on select items. Timing your shopping around this holiday can provide additional savings on top of already reduced prices.

Incorporating these tips can help you avoid buying unnecessary items and spending too much money as you prepare to send your children back to school.
