Prepare for the Unexpected

Unexpected events can be a shock, but a little preparation can go a long way in lessening the effects. Building an emergency fund, Overdraft Protection, using the equity in your home, and protecting your vehicle investment are a few ways DCCU can help you prepare for the unexpected.

Building an Emergency Fund

Building an emergency fund is important, and most experts suggest keeping three to six months’ worth of living expenses in your emergency fund, and a Savings account is a great way to start one. DCCU is pleased to offer a variety of savings options to meet your needs, including savings accounts, Certificates of Deposit, Money Market accounts, and more. Talk to a Member Advisor today to explore our available options.

Overdraft Protection

Even the best budgeters can make a mistake. It’s easy to miss a scheduled payment or transaction you didn’t account for. Now, you’re faced with non-sufficient funds (NSF) and overdraft fees. Overdraft Protection can help you avoid the fees associated with a transaction being declined.

No one likes to overdraw their checking account, but sometimes it happens. DCCU offers three options to protect yourself from “bouncing” a check or overdrawing your account by a debit card purchase:

1. Automatic transfer from Savings – exact amount of money needed to bring your balance to $0 is transferred. A $5 fee will be charged each time a transfer is required

2. Overdraft Protection Line of Credit – money in $100 increments is transferred from this line of credit tied to your Checking Account. Interest accrues until paid back.

3. Overdraft Privilege – (also called Courtesy Pay) DCCU pays the item for you, taking your account negative, you must bring balance back to $0 or greater within two weeks. A $25 fee is charged each time a transfer is required.

Having a form of overdraft protection reduces the cost of paying returned check/item fees to merchants. You may opt to have more than one form of Overdraft Protection and prioritize the order in which they are used. Any type of Overdraft Protection covers all types of transaction that might overdraw your account, including:

  • Checks
  • Debit transactions
  • ATM withdrawals
  • Automatic transfers via ACH (ie electronically)\

DCCU may determine whether or not to pay an overdraft based on factors such as a member’s account history. Whether a transaction will be paid is at the discretion of the credit union and we cannot guarantee we will always authorize and pay a transaction.

Protect Your Investment

Depreciation happens for most vehicles after purchase and can amount to thousands of dollars. If your car is damaged beyond repair, stolen, or declared a total loss, you could still be paying a balance on your loan. Insurance companies often only pay the current value of the car towards your loan payoff, and may not cover the entire loan amount.

Guaranteed Assert Protection (GAP) can help protect you by paying off the remainder of your loan amount that your insurance may not cover. Benefits include:

  • Only $425 which may be added to your loan amount
  • Protection for your loan term (up to 84 months)
  • Coverage for vehicles valued up to $100,000 at time of purchase
  • Payment of benefits up to $50,000
  • Benefits for new or used vehicles, including: cars, light trucks, motorcycles, and some other motorized vehicles

GAP Plus offers the same benefits as GAP, plus it includes $1,000 towards the purchase of a replacement vehicle when financed by DCCU (where allowed by law).

It is difficult to anticipate vehicle repairs and maintenance, and budgeting for these expenses can tie up funds earmarked for other needs. Mechanical Repair Coverage can help you pay for repairs on your vehicle and give you the control to keep your car on the road – where it belongs.

Ask your DCCU Member Advisor if this coverage is right for you.
